Point Kean Boardwalk - Kaikoura
Point Kean Boardwalk - Kaikoura
Kaikoura, New Zealand – A coastal town on the South Island of New Zealand, the Kaikoura Peninsula is known for its ocean views and marine wildlife. New Zealand fur seals are commonly spotted lying on the rocks at the end of the peninsula. The Point Kean carpark is the perfect starting point for a walking trek around the coastline, or to the lookout point to observe the rich diversity of ocean life.
The existing timber boardwalk at Point Kean had deteriorated and needed to be replaced. Treadwell was engaged to supply the FRP grating for a complete anti-slip and no maintenance solution.
Kaikoura has been voted one of the world’s best small towns, and Treadwell is honoured to be able to supply our solution for this project.
Project Challenges
- Material used had to ensure there would be no harm to the wildlife in the area.
- Boardwalk had to be accessible to wheelchair users, prams and other mobility devices.
- Material had to be lightweight to minimise weight loading on the surroundings.

EX-Series® GratEX® FRP Mini Mesh
Treadwell Solution
- EX-Series® GratEX® FRP grating has anti-slip grit impregnated into the surface, ensuring optimal safety for users.
- Treadwell FRP has corrosion-resistant and fire-retardant properties, as well as UV inhibitors, ensuring that structural integrity is maintained even in the exposed outdoor environment.
- GratEX® FRP grating has bi-directional spanning ability, providing high load bearing capabilities.
- Being lightweight and easy to install, FRP can be installed with hand tools, without the need for heavy machinery. This minimises the impact on the surrounding environment.
- FRP is simply fabricated and modified on site. This means there is no need for any hot works permit.
