Milford Sound Gangways
Milford Sound Gangways
A trip to New Zealand is not complete without visiting Milford Sound. A place of staggering beauty, Milford Sound receives the highest rainfall in New Zealand. With limited cellular coverage, it is a great place to fully disconnect and take in the grandeur of the nature surrounding you. This South Island fjord formed by glacial movement is one of New Zealand’s most treasured landmarks. Granted UNESCO World Heritage status, the annual number of visitors has been steadily increasing over the years.
One of the most popular activities is to go on a cruise to experience the falls. Treadwell was engaged to supply the grating for the gangways for visitors to use to board and disembark from the various ferries and boats.
Project Challenges
- An incredibly remote location meant that any error would take valuable time to rectify. Communications and material had to be precise so as not to encounter difficulties during construction.
- As a popular tourist destination, the gangways needed to be able to withstand high foot traffic.
- Material would have to withstand continuous exposure to a wet environment, as well as weather conditions.

- FRP is simply fabricated and modified on site. This means there is no need for any hot works permit.
- Being lightweight and easy to install, FRP is very manageable during construction.
- Given the nature of FRP, any system utilising it is virtually maintenance free, keeping maintenance costs to a minimum.
