Cairns Aquarium
Cairns Aquarium
When the Cairns Aquarium was originally built, as part of the requirements, Treadwell’s ACCESS SYSTEMS and ArchitEX™ structural FRP solutions, including fasteners, were specified as part of the construction. RailEX® handrails and EX-Series® stair treads were installed to ensure maximum safety in an environment that was continually exposed to moisture.
Project Challenges
- Indoor marine environment.
- Customised extra wide panels were required in certain areas of the structure.
- Indoor installation meant that it had to be able to be installed without heavy machinery.

Treadwell Solution
- High performance ArchitEX™ structural profiles and RailEX® handrails were specified in building the structure and providing a sustainable solution over traditional materials.
- ACCESS SYSTEMS EX-Series® stair treads moulded with a solid leading-edge stair nosing were used. This increases the rigor and sturdiness of the entire leading edge ensuring dependable performance in high traffic situations.
- Treadwell’s ArchitEX™ EXSemble FRP Fasteners were utilised to provide an extremely durable solution for this hyper-corrosive installation.
- FRP is simply fabricated and modified on site. This means there is no need for any hot works permit.
- Being lightweight and easy to install, FRP is very manageable during construction.
- Given the nature of FRP, any system utilising it is virtually maintenance free, thus keeping maintenance costs as low as possible.
