MODULE 1 – INTRO AND WHS LEGISLATION
INTRODUCTION
What is the purpose of a safety induction?
- Promote a safe working environment for all employees.
- Help employees understand the values and behavior of the workplace culture.
- Reduce accidents and injuries within the workplace
- Improve safety awareness among employees
- Help new employees transition into the workplace
- Workers know their work responsibilities and limitations.
- Employees are educated about company policies against bullying, harassment, and other critical policies.
- Improve productivity and quality of work among employees.
INTRODUCTION
What will we be going over during this induction?
- Work health and safety legislation
- Workplace hazards and risks
- Special equipment, such as personal protective equipment (PPE), which may require additional training
- Safe work practices
- Emergency procedures
- Workplace first aid and medical care
SAFETY LEGISLATION
What will we be going over during this induction?
Under the WHS Act 2012 (SA) employers have a primary duty to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the health and safety of workers is not put at risk from the conduct of the business or undertaking.
This means that employers have an obligation to ensure workers are safe from risks which are present in the workplace.
However, all workers must also take reasonable care for their own health and safety and for the people around them, including to not put another persons health and safety at risk.
- Under the WHS Act 2012 (SA) employers are required to:
- Eliminate risks to health and safety, as far as reasonably practicable; and
- If it is not reasonably practicable to eliminate risks to health and safety, to minimize those risks so far as is reasonably practicable.
SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervisors Are Responsible For:
- Ensuring workers vacate the premises on notification of an emergency;
- Assist with any problems that you may have at work;
- Ensuring that you adhere to the site safety and Treadwell rules at all times;
- Review any incidents/accidents to ensure our workplace remains safe for everyone;
- Ensuring that workers have completed a job safety analysis prior to the commencement of work for all non-routine tasks.
Your Individual Responsibility:
- Comply with site policies and procedures;
- Do not place yourself or others in an unsafe situation;
- Ensure that other workers do not put you in an unsafe situation;
- Report all accidents and incidents;
- Wear appropriate PPE.
- Complete a job safety analysis before completing all non-routine jobs on site.
SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
Prior to commencing work, workers must ensure they:
- Understand the risks associated with the task;
- Are competent to perform the task safely;
- Hold current licenses of competency related to the task they are undertaking (electrician/working at heights etc.)
All workers must adhere with the following information at all times:
- Signage is used to detail a specific rule, requirement or hazard in the workplace;
- All workers must follow reasonable instruction/direction so that they can undertake their duties in a safe manner;
- Job Safety Analysis (JSA) include controls to eliminate or control risks of the task to be undertaken and must be followed at all times.
